When these second-order neurons have contact with axons from the first-order neurons in the dorsal root ganglia they send out axons to the thalamus. These axons decussate (cross over) from one side of the medulla to the other when they are then known as the internal arcuate fibers. The decussation is also known as the sensory decussation and this forms the medial lemniscus.
